Growing with Mahindra!

Working at Mahindra AFS for a long time can offer you a lot of things – opportunities, experience and a bunch of good memories to take home.

The Beginning

I used to work with another organisation as a combustion engineer in the engines department. Around August 1998, I met Dr. Pawan Goenka and he told me about a project with Mahindra. This project was vetted as the “Future SUV of India”. The more exciting part was, he needed somebody to develop the first turbo-charged engine for Mahindra AFS. The offer was fascinating and irresistible. I was excited to get on board!  The decision was backed by my faith and hope in the Mahindra Group and of course, Dr. Goenka.

My journey here started in the R&D department with a small family of 120 R&D engineers.

Everyone used to work closely, with one objective in mind. I believe my association with developing engines was a joyful ride and unveiled a lot of opportunities to learn.

My Learnings

I believe one of the best values upheld by Mahindra is receptivity to ideas. The leadership is humble and open to listening the voice of its people. The company believes in a learning-driven culture.

Mahindra has empowered me, as a person, along with instilling the confidence to take all kinds of risks. While it sure does bring much excitement, a fine balance becomes the crucial foundation of the business. The empowerment imbibed and the risk appetite inspires me to work in the team!

Opportunities and Growth

One big opportunity that transformed me from an engineer to a leader was the XUV500 project. I was lucky enough to be the first employee to be involved.

The whole team moved from different places around the country to Chennai. It was a cross-functional team which had its set of experienced employees as well as freshers. Our biggest challenge was to engage the millennials in the project team.

The auto passion team and the project team came up with an innovative idea of champions and co-champions where the curiosity of the young team, the young generation was leveraged to observe and take customer inputs. We also leveraged the experienced employee’s knowledge to execute the solution as customers.

The XUV team of youngsters and seniors enjoyed the exercise of capturing customer insights and building them into the product. It was indeed one of the most memorable times here and turned out to be a huge success for XUV500!

Everyone involved in the XUV500 project journey was a family. Everyone was relatively new to the project. The team met customers over the next few months, learnt about the interests of the customers, and then built a product after 4 to 5 years of extensive research. It was a flagship model for the company. There was a lot of responsibility on the team. And I take a lot of pride on how the market has accepted the product!

Moments at Mahindra

The launch day was ecstatic. It was a mix of joy, expectations, and anxiety. We were curious about how customers would receive it. However, it was well-accepted by the customers and we had a wonderful experience. Mr. Anand Mahindra and Mr. Pawan Goenka were present during the launch.

I have had some special moments, professionally, as well as personally. One of them was when Mr. Pawan Goenka called me up and asked me to move to business as the COO of Mahindra Reva. It was an exciting offer. What we do here at Reva is futuristic, and a combustion engineer like myself, moving to make electric vehicles, making mobility pollution free to the environment, was an ‘electrifying’ opportunity for me, quite literally!

Mahindra AFS Is More Of A Community

There is one memory that will always be there with me. Once I was not in town and my daughter had to be admitted to the hospital. At that time, I couldn’t be there with her. Fortunately, my colleagues at Mahindra supported my family and my family never realised I wasn’t there with them. They ensured my family got everything they needed and looked after my daughter. These are the things that hit you. These are the things that make you proud about being a part of an organisation.

I can assure you that the people at Mahindra will always come together in times of need. They will support you and value you as a person in the organisation. It was a special moment for me and my family and will always stay close to my heart.

Why is Mahindra a Great Place To Work?

There is an integration of things that we do here which makes Mahindra a great place to work. Each employee is encouraged to take risks in the work they do. And this is what I believe, is true empowerment. There is always a possibility of entrepreneurial engagement within the organisation.

The Rise philosophy has connected all of us. It’s about what we do every day. It’s the way we live every day. We accept no limits, how we do our work is linked to alternative thinking and why we do what we do is linked to driving positive change. It is well connected to the way we work. I have experienced for the last 16 years that Mahindra is an adapting and evolving company, which has made its future more secure.

Work-Life Balance

Believe me or not, there is no such reality as in work life balance. If you say balance, then you are only optimizing it. To me, it is integration. Conflicts are integrated; you maximize them, and not optimize them. So when you want to maximize your personal life, you integrate your work life. Mahindra does something which is more than work-life balance. Everyone’s has a personal touch in their approach in their professional life. Similarly, everyone has a professional touch in their personal life. The time I spend with my family is pure quality time. It is a professional approach which I got from Mahindra.

Mahindra has helped me facilitate the family sphere. It’s been some delightful years here filled with immense love!

Working here is a transformation in which we keep evolving and keep learning within the organisation as a team and move onto the next step.

We make products but the experience which Mahindra gives has set the framework in which we need to engage with the community.

Who would want to miss out on a culture like this?
